Quick answer
A Google Business Profile decides whether your lab appears in the map results for searches like “blood test near me”. Google ranks these on relevance, distance and prominence. Use your exact signboard name, the Medical laboratory or Diagnostic center category, an accurate address and hours, real photos, regular posts, and steady genuine reviews that you reply to.
Key takeaways
- Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence; you can’t pay for ranking.
- Use your exact signboard name; keywords in the name can get you suspended.
- Pick the truest primary category, usually Medical laboratory or Diagnostic center.
- Ask every patient for a review; no incentives or review gating.
- Chat is gone and Q&A is changing, so complete services and hours matter more.
Why your Google profile matters more than your website
When someone searches “blood test near me” or “pathology lab in [your area]”, Google shows a map with three labs before any website. Those three get most of the calls and direction requests. Your Google Business Profile, not your website, decides whether you’re in that group.
Google says local results are ranked on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the area searched) and prominence (how well known you are, including your reviews and links to you). You can’t pay for a better ranking. You can only make your profile more relevant and more trusted.
Set up your profile the right way
- Name: use exactly the name on your signboard. Adding words like “Best Pathology Lab Kolkata” breaks Google’s rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Primary category: pick the one that completes “This business IS a⦔. For most labs that’s Medical laboratory or Diagnostic center. Add a second only if it’s genuinely true, such as Blood testing service. Don’t use categories as keywords.
- Address: a precise street address, not a PO box. One profile per branch. If you also do home collection, set a service area as well.
- Hours: regular hours plus special hours for holidays.
- Verify: Google may verify by phone, email, video (showing your signboard, equipment and staff areas) or postcard.
- Services: list your main tests and packages, home collection and report delivery options.

Photos and posts that bring calls
- Photos: your signboard from the street (so people find you), reception, the collection room, the team and the analyzers. Real photos beat stock images.
- Posts: once or twice a month, for example a monsoon fever panel, Sunday timings or a new home collection area. Keep phone numbers out of posts; Google prefers you use the Call button.
- Health claims: Google removes deceptive medical information and promotional pricing on regulated health products. Keep posts factual.
Reviews: how to get more without breaking the rules
Reviews feed prominence and are what people read before calling. Google’s rules are strict:
- No paying for reviews, and no discounts or gifts in return for one.
- No “review gating”: you can’t ask only happy patients, or discourage negative reviews.
- No reviews from staff, family or competitors, and no pressuring patients at the counter.
Breaking these can block new reviews, remove existing ones and put a public warning on your profile.
What works is asking every patient at the right moment: a short message with your review link sent with the report on WhatsApp. Reply to every review, thank good ones and answer complaints calmly with a way to contact you.
What changed on Google profiles in 2024β2026
| Change | What it means for labs |
|---|---|
| Chat removed (July 2024) | Patients can’t message you through the profile; make sure your phone and WhatsApp are answered |
| Q&A replaced by an AI “Ask” feature (from late 2025) | Answers come from your profile and reviews, so complete services and hours matter more. Reports suggest many medical categories don’t get it yet |
| Video verification | Have your signboard, equipment and staff areas ready to show on camera |
Mistakes that get lab profiles suspended
- Keywords or city names added to the business name
- A second profile for the same location, or one per test type
- A virtual office or a collection-only address shown as a full lab
- Paid, incentivised or staff reviews
- Phone numbers or prices for regulated products in posts
If your profile is suspended, fix the cause first, then request reinstatement with evidence such as signboard photos and your registration certificate.
Track what it brings you
Your profile’s performance view shows calls, direction requests and website clicks each month. Ask new patients “How did you find us?” at registration and record it, so you can see how many come from Google. Our guide to marketing strategies for diagnostic labs covers the wider plan.

Google removed chat in July 2024. From late 2025 it began replacing Q&A on Maps with an AI “Ask” feature that answers from your profile information and reviews, though reports suggest many medical categories don’t have it yet.
