Free LIMS software: open-source options and what they really cost

The main free LIMS are open-source: OpenELIS Global, SENAITE, BLIS and LabKey Community. The licence is free, but you need a server, IT skills and your own support, and none handles Indian GST billing or WhatsApp reports out of the box. A lab without IT staff is usually better served by low-cost Indian software such as ClinikPe, LabSmart or Flabs.

Facts from each project's or vendor's public pages, checked October 2026. ClinikPe is our product and isn't free for labs; we've said so.

Which describes your lab?

Your main reason

Look at these first

Key facts: free LIMS in 2026

    • Truly free licences: OpenELIS Global (MPL), SENAITE (GPL), BLIS (GPL), LabKey Community (Apache 2.0)
    • What you still pay for: Server, setup, customisation, backups, support and analyzer middleware
    • Indian free plans: None found for labs; LabSmart's free plan is paused
    • Low-cost alternatives: LabSmart from β‚Ή4,999 a year, Flabs from β‚Ή500 a month, ClinikPe from β‚Ή14,999 a year
    • Free for doctors: ClinikPe, permanently, for independent doctors' practices
    • Data law: Patient data falls under India's DPDP Act 2023, free software or not

    What "free" leaves out

Open-source LIMS are serious software, used by governments and research institutes. For a private Indian pathology lab, these are the gaps.

    • Someone has to run it

You need a server or cloud account, installation (often with Docker or Linux) and updates. SENAITE says the cost moves to implementation and customisation.

    • Indian workflows aren't built in

GST invoices, doctor referral commission, WhatsApp report delivery and Indian report formats all need customising.

    • No one is on call

Community support has no guaranteed response. LabKey provides no support on its free edition.

    • Analyzers need middleware

Connecting your machines often needs extra software or development work.

Free LIMS options, and low-cost ones worth comparing

    Free LIMS: common questions

    Is there free LIMS software?

Yes. Open-source systems such as OpenELIS Global, SENAITE, BLIS and LabKey Community have no licence fee. You pay instead for a server, installation, customisation and support, and none of them is built around Indian pathology reports, GST billing or WhatsApp delivery.

What is the best free LIMS for a pathology lab in India?

For a lab without IT staff, a fully free LIMS usually costs more in time than it saves. Low-cost Indian options are more practical: ClinikPe (free trial, then β‚Ή14,999 a year or β‚Ή19,999 one-time for offline), LabSmart (from β‚Ή4,999 a year) or Flabs (β‚Ή500 a month). For government or public-health programmes with IT support, OpenELIS Global is the main open-source choice.

Is OpenELIS suitable for a private lab in India?

It can be, if you have someone to install and maintain a Linux server with Docker and Java. Out of the box it doesn't handle Indian GST invoices, referral commission or WhatsApp report delivery, so expect customisation work.

What does a 'free' LIMS really cost?

The licence is free; the rest isn't. Common costs are the server and backups, installation and customisation (often the largest cost), staff time, validation documents for accreditation, and middleware for analyzers. Without a support contract, nobody is obliged to fix problems quickly.

Is it safe to download free pathology software from the internet?

Be careful. Cracked or unknown downloads can carry malware and expose patient data, and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 applies to that data. Use official sources, check how data is backed up and make sure you can export it.

    Is ClinikPe free?

ClinikPe is free forever for independent doctors. Labs get a free trial on cloud plans, then pay β‚Ή14,999 a year (Pro) or β‚Ή19,999 one-time for the offline Desktop plan, excluding GST, with no setup, migration or training fees.

    How we made this comparison

Written by the ClinikPe product team in Kolkata. We make ClinikPe, so read this with that in mind. Every detail about the other products comes from their own websites or public listings, checked in October 2026. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, we say so rather than guess. Prices change, so confirm with each vendor before you decide. If something here is wrong or out of date, write to support@clinikpe.com and we'll correct it. Last updated .
